SORROWS Film (2 minute video clip for Naas Sondheim application)
Aiming to entice the viewer with macro images of glass and a haunting soundscape created entirely from my voice, the SORROWS film exposes an internal world of personal thought that insists upon an external expression. It uses footage from my Sorrows Release Installation project which is comprised of hundreds of glass pieces and a dynamic soundscape that changes with viewer interaction due to hidden sensors (Edinburgh, Scotland 2015). Film viewers will see the concept behind the Sorrows Release project take shape from my perspective on sorrows, those flutterings of pain and memory that live in the recesses of the mind and move to the fore when triggered. Sorrow is part of the human condition, experienced individually but connecting us collectively. Juxtaposing the interior with the exterior, clarity with confusion, tension with release, movement with stillness, and cacophony with quiet, SORROWS strives to embody the complicated, organic emotions around sorrows. I directed the film and created all the glass; the entire soundscape is made of my voice whispering the written sadnesses I collected from my community. I hired Alkistis Terzi for the cinematography and composer David Faleris for the sound design in both the film and installation. The film was awarded a New Designers prize from the Contemporary Glass Society (UK) in 2015.
